Art
Purpose of Study
A high-quality Art education will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to create their own works of art. It should inspire pupils’ creativity and encourage them to explore ideas, develop their imagination and express themselves visually. Teaching should equip pupils to use a range of materials and techniques, think imaginatively, experiment with artistic processes and reflect on their work. Art helps pupils to develop their creativity while building practical skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art techniques. Through studying the work of artists, craft makers and designers from different cultures and historical periods, pupils develop an understanding of how art reflects the world around them and gain confidence in expressing their own ideas and experiences.
Who is the Cowley Artist?
At Cowley St Laurence, we believe every child is an artist. A “Cowley Artist” is a pupil who is curious, creative and confident in exploring different ways to express their ideas. Through their learning journey, children develop the skills and knowledge needed to experiment with materials, evaluate their work and appreciate the work of others.
A Cowley Artist is someone who:
-
explores ideas with imagination and creativity
-
develops artistic skills through practice and experimentation
-
observes the world closely and records ideas through drawing and sketching
-
reflects on their work and the work of others
Our pupils learn to take inspiration from famous artists and designers, using their techniques and ideas to influence their own work. Through this process they build confidence, independence and pride in their artistic achievements.
Cowley Art Rationale
Art is valued at Cowley St Laurence as an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum. The school recognises the importance of the arts in supporting children’s creativity, self-expression and cultural understanding. The curriculum is designed to provide pupils with meaningful artistic experiences while also developing technical skills and knowledge. The Art curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils build on their skills each year. Children are introduced to a wide range of media and techniques including drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles and mixed media. They learn how to plan, create and evaluate their artwork while developing an understanding of artistic processes.
