Science

Purpose of Study

A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

Who is the Cowley scientist?

The Cowley Scientist is a child who shows curiosity about the world around them and uses knowledge to make connections between scientific ideas and concepts. They are able to design a variety of exciting and interactive experiments: changing variables, making predictions, creating a method and evaluating the results. Using scientific vocabulary they are able to explain phenomena and apply their learning to different situations.

Cowley Science rationale

  • Lessons are interactive, engaging and immersive allowing children to make links to previous scientific learning and learning across the curriculum.

  • Scientific vocabulary is a crucial part of all learning and children will use this to explain their ideas and learning.

  • Scientific enquiry is at the heart of the curriculum, sparking children’s interest and curiosity.

  • Objectives are embedded and revisited throughout the curriculum to ensure pupils are able to remember more and apply this to new learning.
