Well Being & Citizenship (PSHCE)

Purpose of Study

The aim of teaching pupils about physical health and mental wellbeing is to give them the information that they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing. This will enable them to recognise what is normal and what is an issue in themselves and others and, when issues arise, know how to seek support as early as possible from appropriate sources.

Physical health and mental wellbeing are interlinked, and it is important that pupils understand that good physical health contributes to good mental wellbeing, and vice versa.

Who is the Cowley Citizen?

The Cowley Citizen is a child whose understanding of themselves and the world they are growing up in reflects our values, alongside societies. They are able to demonstrate an understanding of personal health and the impact and dangers of harmful substances and behaviours. Our Citizens will also show awareness of others and the need to settle conflicts, maintain friendships and demonstrate fair treatment towards all in life, no matter the differences between each of us.

Cowley Citizenship & Wellbeing rationale

  • Lessons are interactive, engaging and immersive allowing children to make links to previous learning across the curriculum.

  • Citizenship and Wellbeing vocabulary is a crucial part of all learning and children will use this to explain their ideas and learning.

  • Objectives are embedded and revisited throughout the curriculum to ensure pupils are able to remember more and apply this to new learning.

  • Educational visits give an opportunity for teachers to plan Citizenship and Wellbeing learning outside of the classroom. This includes local places and visitors who can come into school to share learning and have hands on experiences.
