Purpose of Study

Design and Technology is a practical subject that allows children to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. At Cowley St Laurence CE Primary School, pupils design, make and evaluate products while considering their own needs and the needs of others. Through Design and Technology, children develop knowledge and skills that link to subjects such as mathematics, science, computing and art. They learn how to design ideas, use tools and materials safely, and improve their work through testing and evaluation. Pupils also learn about food and nutrition, including how to prepare simple dishes and develop their understanding of healthy eating. Design and Technology help children develop creativity, practical skills and confidence so they can solve problems and prepare for the future.

Cowley DT Rationale

At Cowley St Laurence CE Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum is based on our three key principles: Knowledge, Curiosity and Success.

Knowledge:  Children build knowledge and skills through designing, making and evaluating products. They learn about materials, structures, mechanisms and food preparation, following the National Curriculum.

Curiosity:  Children are encouraged to explore ideas, ask questions and think creatively. They investigate existing products and use what they learn to design their own solutions.

Success:  All pupils are supported to develop their skills and improve their work. They are encouraged to try new ideas, reflect on their designs and learn from mistakes.
