Purpose of Study

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Who is the Cowley Linguist?

The Cowley Linguist is a child who shows an understanding of how language influences our need to communicate with others, both orally and in writing. They understand how language can be used to express themselves as well as learn about other countries, cultures and ways in which language has changed the way we have learnt about the past. Learning another language allows the children of Cowley to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the importance of precision within language and identify their place in the world.

Cowley Language rationale

  • Lessons are interactive and engaging allowing children to make links within languages, whether this is their first or additional language.

  • Lessons give opportunities for oral and written skills to develop a broad range of language skills.

  • Explicit teaching of key vocabulary and grammar.

  • Objectives and previous skills are revisited throughout the curriculum to ensure pupils are able to remember more and apply this to new learning.
